What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease or periodontal disease refers to a condition that occurs when your gums become infected with bacteria and consequently inflamed. An extremely common condition that typically presents as pockets of infected gum tissues, gum disease eventually affects most people at some point during their lives. Over time, gum disease can go from showing minimal symptoms to causing major trouble and can eventually result in considerable damage to both your oral health and your overall well-being.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

Initially, gum disease may display few to no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they tend to be mild at first — bleeding during brushing, swelling or inflamed gums, or loose-feeling teeth are common. Over time, though, if left untreated, symptoms can escalate to the point where you may suffer from receding gums, lose teeth, or even experience damage to your underlying jaw structure as the infection spreads.

What Is Gum Disease Therapy?

Fortunately, gum disease is highly treatable, especially if addressed early on. We do a procedure called scaling and root planing to treat gum disease. Also sometimes called a deep cleaning or a periodontal cleaning, this procedure allows us to clean out the pockets of infected gum tissue and remove the plaque and tartar that have built up on the roots of your teeth over time. This helps to stop the spread of the disease or even reverse it in some cases. We typically suggest scheduling a scaling and root planing at least once every six months if you have been diagnosed with gum disease.
